COFRET leads European discussions on the Carbon Footprint of Freight Transport

Date: 21/5/2012

Key members of the COFRET consortium were joined by a representative of the European Commission to run a Special Session at the recent Transport Research Arena in Athens. The session entitled "Measuring Carbon Footprint of Freight Transport Chains" allowed an examination of existing practices in the topic area as well as a discussion of how this is informing the current work of the COFRET consortium in terms of harmonising existing methodologies.

The session was attended by delegates representing a broad range of organisations including the French delegation who was able to provide an update on the implementation of their national regulation requiring transport operators to publish the CO2 emissions related to transport, and several organisations who work closely with the logistics industry who were keen to apply the emerging COFRET methodology as soon as it can be made available.

The presentations that introduced COFRET and the European policy perspective, which set the agenda for the remainder of the discussions, are available for download (please click relevant link).
